Jesus, The Son of God, Is God! What Does the Bible Say?

“The deity of Christ is the key doctrine of the scriptures. Reject it, and the Bible becomes a jumble of words without any unifying theme. Accept it, and the Bible becomes an intelligible and ordered revelation of God in the person of Jesus Christ.”

    J. Oswald Sanders

The scriptures indeed affirm the divinity of Jesus, the second person of the Triune God – a Divine Being made up of three persons (Father, Son and the Holy Spirit). Jesus, the Son is of one substance – nature, essence and attributes with the Father. He carries the same essence of the divine nature that makes God, God. The same applies to the Holy Spirit. Certainly, this view of the divinity of Christ presents many modern minds with so many difficulties. This is expected because God is undefinable, and we can only know Him by the extent He has revealed Himself in Scripture.

In this article, I will be providing some Bible verses which give credence to the claim that the “Jesus” revealed in Scripture as the Son of God is God. The purpose is not to provide exegetical exposition of these scriptural verses. The reason being that these verse are very straight forward in conveying the intended meaning on the subject. Kindly let us journey together through the Bible:

    John 1:18
“No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.”

    Philippians 2:5-6
“You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to.”

    Colossians 2:9-10
“For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily. and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.”

    John 10:31-33
Again, his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?” We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”

    John 5:16-18
“So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. In his defence, Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” For this reason, they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.”

     John 1:1, 14
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

    John 8:57-58
“The people said, “You aren’t even fifty years old. How can you say you have seen Abraham?” Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I Am!” (Note: this is the name of God as revealed to Moses – cf. Ex. 3:7)

    Revelation 1:17-18
“When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.”

    Matthew 28:8-9
“So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshipped him.” (Note: only God will take worship)

    John 20:27-28
“Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

    2 Peter 1:1
“Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ.”

    Conclusion

I believe going through these verses, you are convinced that Jesus is indeed God. The Prophet Isaiah in his prophetic revelation of Him said:

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. This is what Billy Graham of blessed memory had to say: “Jesus Christ is God in human flesh, and the story of His life, death, and resurrection is the only Good News the world will ever hear.”
